RANGERS MEDIA WIN LEAGUE TITLE 🏆

2013

MATCH REPORT

Rangersmedia claimed the Glasgow and District Sunday Football Championship with a 2-1 win over Garnock.

Media travelled to Ralston for the final game in a pulsating season against midtable Garnock, and with three points needed to clinch the title, there was no room for error.

The side lined up with a 3-5-2 formation again with Rangersmedia at full strength.

The game started quickly with Media flying out the traps and taking the game to their opponents. Inside the first 10 minutes the visitors could have been three up but poor finishing and some excellent work from the big keeper kept the score at 0-0.

Media continued to dominate possession with Bett and Wilson up front causing bother to the Garnock backline, then on the half hour mark they deservedly took the lead through a clinical penalty from top scorer William Wilson.

But Garnock battled and defended well, and were clearly determined not to see the league trophy presented on their home patch.

Just before half-time the outstanding Gary Bett lost his man in the box to power a wonderful header past the keeper and into the net, sending the players and management into raptures.

There was more of the same in the second half with Media on top and Garnock looking to hit on the break.

The backline of Perry, Finnie and Richards dealt with whatever came their way with Finnigan in goals also in no mood to give anything away.

Garnock were awarded a penalty after a hand ball in the box.

The striker stepped up and hit it low and hard, but Finnigan was equal to it and produced a top drawer save.

Media were starting to shake at the back as time ticked down and nerves became obvious.

This was now a case of seeing out the last 10 minutes.

Again the referee pointed to the spot after Gibb failed to read the bounce of the ball with it spinning up, and clearly striking the player’s hand. This time the ball was hammered home to make it 2-1.

Garnock threw everything at Media in hope of snatching an equaliser and spoiling the party, but it wasn’t to be.

Media held on and for the first ever time became GDSFC league champions, a tremendous achievement for manager David Ramsay and the team.

David said: “After losing the league on goal difference last season the boys have came back stronger and lifted the trophy. We’ve worked hard all season and it’s paid off. It’s a proud moment for me and everyone involved with the club to say that we are now Glasgow and District Sunday Football Championship winners.”

Team: Finnigan, Macgregor, Nicol, Perry, Finnie, Richards, J Ramsay, Diver, Reid, Wilson, Bett. Subs: McAuley, Allan, Gibb, MacInarlin, O’Donnell, Sweeney.
